APPEALS Project Kano State Co-ordinating Office in collaboration with NSPRI Kano zonal office facilitated a Demonstration entitled Interactive/Practical Demonstration on Improved Processing and Packaging Technologies for Wet Tomato Products and shelf-life extension of Tomato Fruits. The demonstration intended to address the gaps and challenges that are being faced by stakeholders in tomato production and processing, including the need to build food security in tomato. How To Increase Tomato Shelf Life Using Plastic Crates in a Suspended Platform

This document captures the lesson learnt in a major challenge faced by the Ungogo Vegetable Marketers Association on how to reduce loss of tomato due to short shelf life and poor handling technique. They sourced tomato from different locations in the state and when unable to sell all produce within a day, the commodity begins to deteriorate due to ambient heat and the coarse nature of the raffia basket used in handling the tomatoes.
